Kyneton Activities and Attractions

The scenic town of Kyneton has much to offer visitors with its trendy boutiques, historic buildings, museum, bluestone churches, gourmet eateries and local wineries. Nearby natural attractions include Hanging Rock (Mt. Diogenes), which was made famous in the novel and film Picnic at Hanging Rock. Hanging Rock is a 15 minute drive from the Central Highlands Motor Inn.

The town of Kyneton is situated on the Campaspe River, an hour northwest of Melbourne, and equal distance from Bendigo, making it the perfect weekend getaway destination.

Take a stroll on one of the Historic Walks among the bluestone buildings, built in the first half of the 1800s when Kyneton became the second European settlement in Victoria, and then grew as the supply centre for the gold fields.

There are many cultural events throughout the year, including the Music Festival in February, the Kyneton Show in March, the Spring Flower Show and the Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival in September.

For racing enthusiasts, Kyneton has over a dozen races in a season including the Kyneton Cup, which runs on the first Wednesday in November, a day after the great Melbourne Cup.

The Botanic Gardens at Kyneton is one of the finest in Victoria's small goldfields towns, dating back to 1858. Just out of town, you'll find the Kyneton Mineral Spring Reserve, Turpin Falls, Blackhill Reserve and Lauriston Reservoir.

There are numerous wineries in and around Kyneton, including Granite Hills Winery, Cobaw Ridge Winery, Paramoor Winery, Trio Station Winery - Virgin Hills, Zig Zag Road Winery, Kyneton Ridge Estate and Hanging Rock winery.
